What we record, and why
Keshi Arena is an open arena where Adapt-1, a learning engine from REI Labs, plays people and learns from their games, a day's lessons at a time. Watching needs no account. Playing does, and your games are recorded.

In short
- We keep your sign-in account's id, handle, display name and picture. Never your email, never a password, and we never post for you.
- We record what happens in the games you play, with timings, so Adapt-1 can learn from them and so we can study how people play for the next season.
- Your handle, name, picture and games are public on the site. Research copies carry a code instead of your identity.
- You can ask for a copy of your data or for your account to be deleted: write to inversealtruism@gmail.com.
What we collect
- When you sign in with X: your account's user id there (it recognises you when you come back), your handle, display name and profile picture link. We ask the provider for no email address and we do not store one.
- When you play: everything that happens in your games: your moves and inputs with their timing, pauses, the result, what Adapt-1 decided and the lessons it learned from them. Also when each game started and ended, whether it was a learning game or practice, and the kind of device you played on (desktop, phone or tablet, worked out from the screen and pointer, not your browser or device model). Each player gets a random internal id that all of this is recorded against.
- When you only watch: the game servers record nothing about you.
- Server logs: our web server keeps standard access logs (IP address, time, page requested, browser) for 14 days, for security and to stop abuse.
- Cookies and browser storage: a sign-in cookie that keeps you signed in (up to 30 days after your last visit), short-lived cookies used during sign-in (minutes), and a cookie that remembers the season you last looked at (one year). Your browser stores your sound and display preferences locally. No advertising cookies, no third-party tracking, no analytics service.
Why
- To run the games and credit what Adapt-1 learned to your profile (the service you ask for when you play).
- To keep them fair: daily allowances per player, one game at a time, and checks that a real-time game was played at real speed.
- To learn from them: to understand how people play and how Adapt-1 adapts, so we can design the next season. For this we make nightly research copies in which your internal id is replaced by a code (a keyed hash; the key changes every season), with no handle, name, picture or sign-in id.
What is public
Your handle, name and picture appear on your profile, on leaderboards and on replays of your games, which anyone can watch once a game is over. The lessons you taught show your handle in the brain's history. Nothing about a game in progress is shown to others.
Who else receives data
- Your sign-in provider (X), while you sign in.
- REI Labs, whose Adapt-1 service is the learning engine: it receives the game situations, its own choices and their outcomes, as lessons and questions. For games that learn each player's habits it also receives your random internal id, never your handle or name. A lesson becomes part of that game's brain and cannot be taken out of it individually.
- Nobody else. We do not sell or rent data.
How long we keep it
| Account and game records | For the season and up to 12 months after it ends, then deleted or anonymised. The brains' teaching history is kept anonymised. |
|---|---|
| Research copies | Up to 24 months after the season. They never contained your identity, and the season's key is destroyed at the end of that time. |
| Backups | 7 daily and 4 weekly copies, each overwritten in turn. |
| Server logs | 14 days. |
A copy, or deletion
To get a copy of your data or have your account deleted, write to inversealtruism@gmail.com. Write from the account you signed in with, or name it, so we can find your records; we answer within 30 days.
Deletion removes your sign-in id, handle, name and picture from our records and from the labels on replays and lessons. Your games stay in the brains' history without your identity, because Adapt-1 has already learned from them. You can also sign out at any time, and withdraw Keshi Arena's access in your X account settings. Signed in, the account page shows what we hold about your sign-in.
And
Keshi Arena is not meant for children under 13. We will update this page when what we record changes, and change the date at the top.
